Exercise your brain

Hi! It’s your brain here. We need to talk! I can do more for you than you can possibly imagine. So why don’t you exercise me more?

I ride around inside your skull and operate all of the functions of your body, without you even having to think about them. So it’s easy to underestimate me. The truth is, you’re only using a fraction of my capabilities.

Like a muscle, I can be exercised and developed into an immensely powerful organ, one that can help you accomplish things you never dreamed possible. Yet you seem happy enough to just go through the motions, using me minimally or in haphazard, inconsistent ways. You’re content to just “phone it in.” What a waste of my synapses!

Look what brains like me have done

Consider for a moment what I could make possible for you, if only you’d invest the effort. Brains just like me have:

  • Envisioned and created some of the most beautiful, inspiring art and music in the history of mankind.
  • Written books and created movies that tell incredibly rich and entertaining stories. Solved scientific and medical mysteries.
  • Envisioned countless inventions and technological advances.

Literally everything you see around you had its first creation in the mind of someone just like you. Awe-inspiring, isn’t it?

The secret of history’s greatest thinkers

Michelangelo. Da Vinci. Beethoven. Einstein. These and other great thinkers had brains that were very similar to me. What made them so incredibly successful? They weren’t satisfied to just get by, to phone in their life’s work, to go through the motions. No, they were inspired to incessantly create art and improve their craft. To break free of convention and experiment with new ideas and possibilities. They had an indomitable passion,  a fire within them that inspired them to transform their thoughts and visions into physical form, so the rest of us could enjoy them.

You could do the same, if you wanted to.

Why not use me more?

You see, you’re underutilizing me.

You activate just enough of me to get through your day, to follow orders and to get things done. But you rarely take time to use me to solve the challenges  you face and to envision new opportunities.

Why not?

I can hear you saying to yourself: “I’m not creative.” (I am your brain – I can hear you think, remember?). It’s time that you realize that creativity is not an innate trait that you either have or you don’t. It’s a skill that can be learned, cultivated and leveraged to help you achieve new levels of success in your life.

It’s time for a brain workout

I’m like a muscle. I need exercise. You need to give me a rigorous workout on a regular basis. What should you do? Here are just a few ideas:

  • Read books related to your profession
  • Go to conferences
  • Network and spend time with incredibly smart people from all walks of life
  • Learn creative problem-solving skills
  • Always be learning and growing

These activities and others stretch me and strengthen me. They also give me more to work with. You see, deep in my subconscious, I contain what you can think of as a “raw material pile” of ideas, concepts and thoughts. As you add more learning and experiences to this pile, you enhance my ability to envision new ideas and accomplish new things.

See how that works?

Here’s something else you should try: Each morning, just after you wake up and get your first cup of coffee, grab a pad of paper and a pencil and spend 30 minutes writing out the challenges you face and brainstorming potential solutions to them. You’ll be doing something that few people bother to do – you’ll be using using me in a proactive, disciplined way to make your life immeasurably better.

I’m ready whenever you are!
