When you write your resume or your LinkedIn profile, it’s easy to fall into the trap of using boring, pedestrian words to describe your skills and accomplishments. But with a bit more thought, you can spice up the wording so it tells a much more compelling story.
Career development website The Daily Muse recently published a blog post entitled 185 Powerful Verbs That Will Make Your Resume Awesome. It lists a series of common resume writing scenarios where the ability to tell a compelling story is a must. As someone who is keenly aware of the brain’s powers of association, I quickly saw the value of it as sort of a thesaurus for job seekers.
To make this list of colorful resume words more visually compelling, I created a mind map that encompasses all 12 job scenarios and all 185 verbs into a highly usable visual form. I then published it as a Shockwave file, so you can expand and contract the branches and view each set of words individually – or all at once, if you want.
To view the interactive version of this mind map, please click on the map image above. Then click on each scenario to view a list of power verbs you can use to add color and interest to the colorful career stories you must tell.
